Project scope:

The Maximo Technology Refresh project ran for 8 months and had three objectives:
1. Upgrade the version of Maximo to the latest release
2. Move Maximo Development and Test environments to Microsoft Azure
3. Move Maximo Production and Staging environments from Transpower House to the Northern Data Centre.

Project risks:
Transpower has a complex and highly controlled network infrastructure, even the smallest of changes have to be carefully managed to avoid risk. Maximo is Transpower’s core asset management tool with multiple servers across several environments and with many integration points to internal and external systems. Managing the challenges associated with changing this environment is demanding and requires accurate record keeping, tight control over change management and constant communication with technical and business stakeholders.

Benefits:
Hubscope was used to disentangle the spaghetti and plot a migration path based on the visual analysis of relationships. Hubscope increased my level of confidence because it provided clarity around data flows which helped to increase business engagement. These flows informed the changes to rules and configurations for the message integration and firewall security teams. Hubscope was used at the weekly stand-up meeting to track migration progress and make sure everyone understood the current snapshot and next environment snapshot. In this way, we iterated and visualized the data for each project phase so that it became a single source of truth for the project that people trusted. By maintaining the data in this ongoing way, the project was also able to deliver an as-built view as part of the formal transition to operations stage. The project is now complete and has been handed over to operational support.
